E’sprezz Yourself!

Whether you’re new to the world of interior decorating or a seasoned pro, the idea of ‘style’ can be difficult to define, as it’s something that differs from person to person. The key ingredient, however, is always the same: confidence. Ultimately, it’s a question of finding your own touches of personal flair; nuances and particularities in anything from colour to content, that are yours entirely. Similarly, when it comes to adding some sprezzatura your own home, it’s important to keep in mind that what the term really refers to is a certain mindset or approach to style, and not a specific look, as such. Simply following a set of rules or imitating an interior thus labelled on Pinterest, is no guarantee that you will achieve effortless style. As Liam himself puts it: “We’re really not talking about so-called rustic or eclectic interiors, but rather interiors that are designed for living in, and not for looking at.”

Here are a few simple suggestions from Liam Mooney, that may serve as a good place to start when thinking about sprezzatura and how it can be utilised in your own style.

  • Try leaning a few paintings against the wall. Artworks don’t all have to hang at eye-level.
  • Furniture layouts should be relaxed, and needn’t conform to the established “grid”.
  • A frayed edge on a carpet is not necessarily a bad thing.
  • Magazines and books laid on every open surface.

–     Exercise disregard for ‘matching’.

–     Generally, homes that are built around art collections are less concerned with interior design, which can often lead to a perfectly appropriate kind of ‘wrongness’.

–     Throws on couches. It’s okay.

–     Use inherited furniture. There’s yet some life in Oupa’s Jonkmanskas. Don’t overlook it.

–     Mix high-value items with cheaper, everyday ones.

–           Tilted lampshade looking kinda nice? Leave it be. You might just be onto something.

i adore your thinking…. thank you!

Ek geniet wat jy sê – dit klink sommer soos “leef”, in plaas van “pinterest decorating”!
